Dedication to the graduates

Today Kehtna Basic School had a graduation party of form 9A and 9B. Some of the students had actively participated in three Comenius projects: M.E.G.R.E, Life in Harmony with Nature and Water - The Spring of Life. Their attitude, contribution, sense of humour and creativity will be missed. We wish them success in their future studies and let's not let good memories of our time together vanish!

Photo Hunt in Tallinn

Teacher Meeli had provided each Estonian student with a fact sheet. With the help of the map every group had to find 4-6 sights and take a photo.

Viru Gates lie on the eastern side of the city wall and were built in 14th century. In 1888 due to the  construction of horse-drawn tramway its gates were ruined. The round-shaped towers were renovated for 1980 Olympic Games (sailing took place in Tallinn) and for Hansaetic Festival in 2003.

Oleviste Church and its tower. first this church was mentioned in 1267. Church got its name after Norwegian king Olaf II Haraldsson. Till the end of the 19th century Oleviste Church was most likely the highest building in the world. Today it has 124-metre high tower and is considered one of the landmarks of Tallinn. It takes to climb 232 steps to reach the top.

Fat Margareta is a canon tower hosting a maritame history museum today. One can see old diving equipment, fishing supplies, different items found from the bottom of the sea,  navy maps etc. From the top visitors can have views to town and to the sea.

Monument for ship "Estonia"
Passenger and ferry ship "Estonia" sank on 28th September 1994 on its voyage from Tallinn to Stockholm, taking the lives of 852 people. The circumstances why it sank are still unclear, but heavy storm had a part in it.

Parliament House, Nevsky Cathedral and Tall Hermann

The church is dedicated to the Novgorod's  ruler Aleksander Nevsky and was built when Estonia belonged to Russia. The citizens found its location very unappropriate, but by 1900 the church was completed. The towers have the most powerful bells, 11 in total, the biggest of which is 15 tonnes. Its interior is decorated with lots of icons and mosaics.

Estonian parliament has 101 seats. On its left side there is a tower Tall Hermann which was built in the middle ages as part of its fortress. Its tower is 48 metres high and every morning Estonian national flag is risen.

The Square of Liberty has the Statue of Liberty. It was built in 2009 to commemorate Estonian War of Independence and all those who have fought for freedom, not only at war. The column is 23.5 metres high and consists of 143 glass bricks.

Tuesday - 14th May: Tallinn

At 8.30 am we gathered by the Kehtna shop and started our journey to Tallinn. At Hagudi, a little village half way, we made a stop to get water. The shop was still closed, but the security officer called the shop assistant and she came in 2 minutes. We bought all 22 small bottles of natural water that the shop had.

Our first stop was at Tallinn Vesi, a water company that provides drinking water to the whole town. Our guide Ants  introduced us the process how water from Lake Ülemiste is cleaned and purified. He showed us old water metres and very modern techniques where O3 is used for purification. We were priviledged to be allowed to see different rooms and its equipment so closely.
Next we were taken to Balti railway station where we divided the students into groups. Every group had 2 Estonian students and a map and they had to find some sights in the old town and take a group  photo where they gave an impression of a water symbol. One task was to climb on top of Oleviste Church.
Teachers at the same time had a walking tour in Upper Town and Downtown. We visited Nevsky Cathedral, saw the Parliament House,  Tall Hermann flag tower, took photos on the viewing platforms and walked down the Narrow Street, making compulsory stops in different souvenir shops. After an hour and a half we met the students at Townhall Square and every group got additional free time for lunch and shopping.

Our afternoon was spent at Seaplane Harbour (Maritime) Museum. First we had a guided tour and then free time in the museum. We visited the submarine Lembitu and steam ship Suur Tõll, also took photos wearing different navy costumes, played battleships and travelled around the world in 15 minutes together with Captain Volkonski.

We had dinner in a Serbian grill restaurant Admiral, on a ship docked in Terminal D. Waiters wearing sailor's costumes served us grilled Baltus steak and homemade ice cream. Although we didn't visit Kadrioru Park, teachers got a box of chocolates with its picture. Time to say good-bye came nearer and nearer and soon the lobby at Susi Hotel was filled with emotions, hugs and kisses. Every end is something else's beginning, we had to remind ourselves.

Monday - 13th May

After the welcome show we had lunch in our school canteen.

Conference started at 2pm.

Tõnis Blank - the vice president of the local government welcomed us and in his speech referred to the connection water has with the other important elements of life.

We also had a guest from the government of Rapla county. She spoke about the bodies of water in general.

Teacher Edda together with some students had prepared snacks and we also had a cake with our project logo.

After the conference teachers had dinner at Varjula Hostel, students gathered in the local Youth Centre. When teachers visited them around 10pm, everybody was having fun. Some were playing WII, some table hockey or table tennis, some were chatting and the others dancing.

Monday - 13th May: Welcome Show

On Monday morning students had a change to attend lessons together with their host students. At 10am Gladis and Hans-Martty showed them around and teacher Evelyn gave a tour for teachers. Then it was time to gather in our assembly hall.

Our welcome was hosted by Form 8 student Egert and form 6 student Diana.

Diana: Dear  students, teachers and honoured guests. More than 2 years ago Comenius project „Water – the Spring of Life” began. During those two years we have organized lots of activities and have  got acquainted with  four different European schools.

Diana: Welcome Spain!
Diana: Welcome France!

Diana: Welcome Turkey!
Diana: Welcome Italy!

Diana: Let our welcome concert now begin. Liisbet is going to play Yiruma’s „River in You” on the piano.

Egert: Next our headmaster Mrs Piret Kallaste welcomes the guest.

Egert: Our concert continues with a song of a stream written by an Estonian composer Jaan Tätte.

Egert:
As the river flows
the sea sometimes glows
By the ocean
the secret potion
creates the waves
which swim into caves
As I sit by the stream,
where I always go to dream
I realize who really cares
about the ocean's tears.

This poem was written by our student Katarin Leppik. Our next piece of music will be performed by Kerttu. It  is also about water. Rather stormy water.

Egert: Several our students go to Kehtna’s music and arts school. You’ve heard them playing the piano and singing. Next Andres is going to perform a song “Rainbow” on the trumpet.

Diana: Nature is worth discovering. Every ripple on water, sign on sand or group of geese in the sky tells its own story. So does a river, lake or a sea. I’m holding a book where 5 project partners gathered their legends about water.

Partner schools

ESTONIA: Kehtna Primary School is situated in the village of 1,200. There are no big towns nearby, although the capital Tallinn is just 60km to the north. We are surrounded by forests, bogs, farmland and therefore paying extra attention to nature studies and the environment is important to us. We are a school of the Green Flag and a Health-Concious school. There are 155 students and 20 teachers in our school. Students are aged 7-17.

ITALY: Liceo Classico "Megara" con sezione scientifica annessa is a secondary school for students aged 14-19. It mainly offers three different courses for classical, scientific and social science studies. The school mainly serves students from Augusta. Our school is located in a very important area for its nature, history, archaeology and tourism. Our suburban town of Augusta is very near to Siracusa, one of the oldest and most important Greek colonies in Sicily. Our students are all members of "Legambiente" which is a national leading environmental organization which offers educational programs in schools. We live by the sea and our area is very rich in waterways, rivers and ponds.

FRANCE: College Claude Bernard is in a suburban city (Grand-Quevilly) with about 30,000 inhabitants. A town with 400,000 people called Rouen is near to us. The area has little industry nowadays following the closure of the chemical factories and the Renault car plant.

TURKEY: Tepeköy Ilkögretim Okulu is a public school serving children aged 7-15, starting from pre-school till the 8th grade. It is a rural school and caters for 226 students and 18 teachers. Our school is in Nevsehir (Cappadocia Region), being situated in agricultural region. Our region does not have sufficient water resources and we need to focus on environmentally-friendly options.

SPAIN: IES Concepcion Arenal is a secondary education centre located in Ferrol, a town with 70,000 inhabitants in the region of Galicia (north-west of Spain). There are 85 teachers and 700 students in compulsory (12-16 years old), post-compulsory (16-18 years) part and in vocational training.
